Ringworm is a common autoimmune skin disease. It can be seen as coin-sized pieces of hair isolated on the scalp or throughout the scalp.

Autoimmune disease occurs when the body’s immune system fights against healthy cells. The body perceives its own hair follicles as foreign, sends antibodies to them and the hair begins to fall out. Typically, hair loss occurs on the head, beard, and sometimes eyebrows. Highly stressful periods such as illness, stress, injury, or loss of a loved one can trigger ringworm.

Ringworm may vary from person to person. Hair loss in various areas in many people can be quite severe in others. Although sudden hair loss on the scalp is common, in some cases, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard and even body hair may also be lost. The disease is not contagious and may recur from time to time.

How is ringworm diagnosed?

Ringworm is diagnosed by a dermatologist based on the results of various blood tests. Of course, the doctor may also request a biopsy of the hair follicles. As a result of all these examinations, the disease is diagnosed.

How is ringworm treated?

There is no specific treatment for ringworm. Hair loss occurs in both men and women. However, it is more common in men. Various medications and lifestyle changes are used to combat the disease, prevent hair loss, and promote hair growth.

Steroid medications are used in the middle and late stages of ringworm. These medications are usually available as creams, subcutaneous injections, or injections into the buttocks. Sprays and lotions containing cortisone can be used in this area for hair growth.

Another method used in the treatment of ringworm is “immunotherapy”. The active substance that causes an allergic reaction is injected into the problem area. This treatment method is not preferred by most doctors as it may cause permanent skin irritation. Therefore, drug treatment is preferred.

Consuming foods rich in iron, zinc, biotin, vitamin A, antioxidants to reduce autoimmune reactions, quitting smoking and alcohol, regular exercise, and using supplements such as aloe vera, argan oil, and almond oil, which have a positive effect on hair growth, have positive results in relieving the symptoms of the disease.

Finally, experts say that in order to have healthy hair, you should not wash your hair with very hot water, do not dye it, do not use a hair dryer and do not comb it with hard brushes.
